This role can be based in the UK, in Bristol or London, or any of our three Danish offices – Aarhus, Copenhagen, Vejle. Remote working / home working during Covid is also supported.
Wood Thilsted (WT) is a boutique consulting engineering company focused on all aspects of foundation design within the offshore and onshore renewable energy industry. WT’s capabilities began with a focus on geotechnical and structural engineering, and has grown over the last 5 years to include geophysics, metocean, scour, seismic specialties. We operate globally with projects located in Asia, North America and Northern Europe. We have a number of large foundation detailed design projects in offshore wind, as well as a continuous stream of concept and FEED studies, plus design work on several innovative concepts (outside of the currently accepted foundation concepts for offshore wind), including floating structures. We continue to strengthen the way we deliver these diverse projects, implementing state of the art project management and problem solving, and we are seeking talented people to join the team.
The primary work location will be one of Bristol, London, Copenhagen or Vejle (Denmark). However, given our teams, clients and projects are spread internationally across Northern Europe, North America and South-East Asia, you may expect some travelling in relation to your work, both nationally and internationally. In addition, there may be opportunity during your employment for long-term or short-term postings abroad.
Areas of responsibility:
As a Lead Wind Engineer, your main assignment will be to deliver or manage the delivery of the Design Wind Assessments and Wind Resource Assessments for offshore wind projects. In your role, you will:
-Scope out and price the work required
-Manage the delivery of Design Wind Assessment and Wind Resource Assessments. This may either include delivering the work yourself for, e.g. early stage projects, managing subcontractors, or, as the company grows, manage other employees delivering the work.
– Quality check the work delivered
-Develop in house tools to automate the assessments and reporting
-Train other team members to deliver Design Wind Assessment and Wind Resource Assessments to ensure redundancy and quality across the team
-Be responsible for winning work, i.e. meeting clients, preparing proposals, etc.
You should preferably hold a master’s degree or higher in a related science or engineering discipline. You should also have experience overseeing the work of project teams and/or subcontractors. You should have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the offshore wind industry.
It is essential that you:
–Have experience in delivering design wind assessments and wind resource assessments, including:Wake modelling experience, Normal wind conditions: Shear, Weibull distributions and wind roses, Free turbulence, Air temp/humidity/pressure/density
-Have experience analysing extreme wind conditions and extreme value analysis re: Speed, Shear, Air Density, Turbulence
-Experience with instrumentation and QA/QC of wind data
-Have strong programming skills in Matlab and/or Python
-Are well organised and able to keep track of multiple aspects of work, re-appraising and re-prioritising activities throughout the project lifecycle as both your team’s availability and the client’s requirements evolve;
– Are able to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, consultants and contractors through a variety of media, including both web-based telecommunication and face-to-face meetings;
-Are a team player;
-Are pro-active in your efforts to engage with others;
-Demonstrate a strong drive to fulfil your assignments, and a willingness to take the initiative when faced with opportunities to exceed expectations;
-Possess excellent numeracy, literacy, communication and interpersonal skills;
-Are fluent in the use of standard office software such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc
Furthermore, it is advantageous if you have experience of some of the following:
-10+ years relevant experience as a wind engineer, in the offshore renewables sector;
-Managing floating LiDAR surveys
-Using ArcGIS or QGIS
-Development of bespoke software, especially targeting streamlined/automated processes/reporting workflows
-Other technical studies required at an early stage for offshore wind farm development, e.g. layout optimisation
-A solid understanding of Client liaison;
-Working within different types of contractual arrangements, for example as a client, as a consultant/contractor, as a collaborative partner, etc.;
-Developing proposals for engineering contracts;
-Fabrication and/or offshore installation processes;
-Primary and/or secondary steel design processes, including relevant design codes and standards such as DNVGL, Eurocode 3, IEO 19902, etc.;
-Certification of detailed design work to DNVGL-ST-0126.
-An appreciation of the current and projected scales of the offshore wind sector, including different turbine and foundation technologies, and the different types of challenges prominent in different regions of the global market;
