The Project

With the first offshore wind farms in the US around the corner, Vineyard Wind is developing Vineyard Offshore Wind Farm off the coast of Massachutets. If successful, the wind farm is expected to be fully operational in 2020 and will have a total capacity of up to 800MW. Wood Thilsted were commissioned in 2016 to support the development of this exciting project from a complete green field development stage all the way through the competitive tender phase. Combining our technical excellence with our holistic understanding of offshore wind developments, we are proud of bringing commercialisation of offshore wind in the US closer.

WT Approach

First, a comprehensive due dilligence exercise was undertaken using our extensive experience in the realisaition of more than 20 offshore wind farms around the world. Following completion of layout optimisation in collaboration with our partners C2Wind, we managed the geophysical and geotechnical surveys for the site and the export cables and created a comprehensive ground model for the site while completing the geotechnical interpretation.

Different foundation concepts were thoroughly investigated and FEED designs were performed for the wind turbines and the substation considering both monopiles and jackets. The analyses were undertaken using our advanced in-house software which is capable of producing numerous possible designs before deriving the optimum. During the 18 months’ period of our involvement, we offered continuous strategic support to the project while also being responsible for critical interfaces.
