Wood Thilsted Delivers Groundbreaking Monopile Design for Thor Offshore Wind Farm

New TP-less design streamlines foundation structure, boosting construction and installation efficiency across Denmark’s largest offshore wind project.

15 October 2025, Copenhagen | London – International offshore wind consultancy Wood Thilsted has announced the successful installation of its engineered monopile foundations at Thor Offshore Wind Farm, located 22 kilometres off the coast of Thorsminde, Jutland. Thor is a joint offshore wind project of RWE (51%) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49%). RWE is in charge of construction and operations throughout the lifecycle of the Thor offshore wind farm.

Thor has benefitted from Wood Thilsted’s innovative foundation design. A key innovation in Wood Thilsted’s contribution is the use of TP-less (Transition Piece-less) monopiles, which simplify the entire foundation structure. This approach reduces complexity in design and construction.

Designing TP-less monopiles presents unique engineering challenges. Equipment typically housed within the Transition Piece must now withstand direct exposure during pile driving and installation. Wood Thilsted’s team applied its deep expertise in geotechnical engineering and structural design to ensure the monopiles are resilient enough to endure the harsh conditions of the North Sea – delivering a durable, efficient, and sustainable foundation solution.

At around 100 metres in height and each weighing up to 1,500 tonnes, the site’s 72 monopiles are more than just massive steel structures. They represent seamless collaboration across a multitude of disciplines, driving the future of clean energy.

The completion of the installation campaign marks a major milestone for the Thor project and a significant achievement for Wood Thilsted’s engineering team, whose design has now been successfully implemented offshore.

Wood Thilsted’s Project Director for Thor, Peter Sunnucks said:

“The Wood Thilsted team is extremely proud to have delivered a landmark engineering solution in close collaboration with RWE and the wider Thor project team. Working together on such a significant project in Danish waters has been a rewarding experience for our engineers, who are excited to contribute to Denmark’s green energy transition by helping deliver clean electricity at low prices. We look forward to building on this success and collaborating again on future offshore wind projects.”

Alastair Muir Wood, CEO of Wood Thilsted remarked:

“Interdisciplinary teamwork was key to solving the complex engineering challenges of Thor. Our close collaboration with RWE and the wider project team enabled us to deliver a vital foundation design that meets the unique demands of the Danish North Sea. The successful implementation of our TP-less monopile solution reflects the strength of our engineering approach and our commitment to driving innovation in offshore wind.”

Günther Fenle, Project Director for Thor at RWE:

“Together with our partner, Norges Bank Investment Management, we are well on track with the construction of Thor – Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date. The safe installation of the monopiles designed by Wood Thilsted is testament to the expertise, dedication and collaboration of the entire team involved. I am looking forward to the start of the turbine installation in spring 2026.”

With a planned capacity of 1.1 gigawatts (GW), Thor will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date. Once fully operational, it will generate enough green electricity to power more than one million Danish households.

This milestone comes at an exciting time for offshore wind in Europe and globally. Wood Thilsted’s Anglo-Danish ownership and strong roots in Northern European offshore wind have enabled it to deliver innovative solutions to clients as the sector has grown exponentially over the past two decades.

This year also marks Wood Thilsted’s tenth anniversary, having been founded in 2015 by engineers Christian LeBlanc Thilsted and Alastair Muir Wood. Today, the company has grown to over 180 employees worldwide, including a growing presence in the Asia Pacific region.
