"Offshore wind must be the bedrock” of Great Britain’s clean energy future, says new Government-commissioned report.
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has laid out an ambitious roadmap in its newly published Clean Power 2030 report, commissioned by the Secretary of State and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). The report calls for offshore wind to form the backbone of Great Britain’s clean energy strategy, suggesting it should provide over half of the nation’s power generation by 2030 to achieve a fully clean power system.
Wood Thilsted CEO Alastair Muir Wood welcomed today's report, stating:
“We are pleased to see the NESO roadmap position offshore wind as a foundation for Great Britain’s clean power future. The UK leads globally in offshore wind, with robust support from a world-class supply chain that includes companies like Wood Thilsted. However, realising this vision requires further urgent action to meet the UK’s ambitious clean energy targets.”
The report emphasises that meeting the 2030 clean power milestone would allow Great Britain to harness more domestic energy resources, enhancing energy independence and contributing significantly to the broader goal of reaching net zero by 2050. Achieving these goals will demand an annual investment averaging £40 billion or more.
Muir Wood continued, “For the supply chain to effectively drive this transformation, we need long-term policy certainty, clear investment decisions, and sustained market momentum. Delivering on this 2030 roadmap demands an integrated industrial strategy that aligns across sectors, supply chain, consumers, communities and the environment.
“The true challenge is not just about generating green power but doing so in a way that positively contributes to the environment and communities. Nature inclusivity and community engagement should be at the heart of every step we take towards a clean, sustainable energy future.”
